Road Safety Audit - New Tyne Crossing

Mark Hedley was Audit Team Leader for all the Road Safety Audits on the New Tyne Crossing (TT2). The TT2 scheme involves the construction of a new two-lane tunnel under the River Tyne to carry southbound traffic, together with the refurbishment of the existing two-lane tunnel to carry northbound traffic.
- With regard to the new tunnel, the scheme related to this project specifically comprises:
- A northern approach ramp and associated road works including the construction of a new ten-lane toll plaza;
- A northern and southern cut-and-cover tunnel;
- An immersed tube tunnel;
- A southern approach ramp and southern interchange; and
- New infrastructure works for ventilation and administration buildings and sub-station.
In respect of the existing tunnel, the improvements comprise:
- The provision of new pedestrian escape shafts, one on each side of the river; and
- The upgrading of the toll collection facilities and plaza.
